All-Analog 180g Vinyl LP of Hank Mobley’s Poppin’ Mastered from the Original Master Tapes by Kevin Gray & Pressed at RTI: Reference-Caliber Blue Note Reissue Helmed by Music Matters’ Joe Harley
Blue Note collectors greatly appreciate Hank Mobley for the tenor-saxophonist could always be relied upon to contribute inspired solos, catchy originals, and a leadership style that resulted in memorable matchups with the greats of hard bop. Mobley recorded so many classics during his prime years that album’s like Poppin’, a session from late 1957, went unissued until 1980. It finds Mobley leading a solid sextet with Art Farmer, Pepper Adams, Sonny Clark, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones in its ranks. The ensemble sound of the band gives the proceedings a distinctive, ominous flavor but this is essentially a blowing date.
