Azymuth – Outubro (Vinyl LP)

$53.00

Released in 1980 on Milestone Records, Azymuth‘s Outubro stands as one of the defining statements of Brazilian jazz-fusion. Following directly in the wake of Light As A Feather — the album that had propelled the Rio trio to international recognition on the back of the global hit Jazz Carnival — Outubro found José Roberto BertramiAlex Malheiros and Ivan “Mamão” Conti at the height of their powers, deepening their signature blend of samba rhythm, jazz harmony, funk attitude and psychedelic electronics into something altogether more assured and adventurous.

The album moves with effortless range: from the earth-shaking slap-bass of Dear Limmertz — which would go on to become a staple of London’s underground disco and jazz-dance club scenes — to Bertrami’s luminous Rhodes work on the vocoder-laced samba-jazz gem Un Amigo, and Conti’s irresistible swing on Maracana, a pure distillation of the trio’s self-coined “samba doido” (crazy samba) philosophy. Two cover versions anchor the record further: the title track, originally penned by Milton Nascimento, and Chick Corea‘s 500 Miles High, both reimagined with the virtuosity and personality that made Azymuth one of the world’s great jazz ensembles. This 2026 repress on Far Out Recordings brings the album back to wax for a new generation of listeners and collectors.
