Ella Fitzgerald – Jazz at the Philharmonic: The Ella Fitzgerald Set (Vinyl 2LP)

$40.00

Jazz At The Philharmonic began on July 2, 1944 when jazz entrepreneur Norman Granz staged a benefit concert at Philharmonic Hall in Los Angeles. It was an overwhelming critical and commercial success, and spawned more concerts. Eventually a series of national and international tours were organized, Granz decided to record them for posterity – knowing that the jazz public would want to relive the historic sounds of JATP for years to come. He handpicked the musicians for JATP, and they were indeed the cream-of-the-crop.

This 2LP set is an updated version of its first vinyl release in Verve’s original Jazz At The Philharmonic archival series, now matching the expanded CD edition issued in 2016. It finds the great Ella Fitzgerald fronting an all-star band, including Charlie ParkerLester YoungBuddy RichRay Brown and Hank Jones among others, in captivating performances recorded in 1949, 1953 and 1954 at Carnegie Hall. And it’s now one dynamic set, with jaw-dropping interpretations of “Oh, Lady Be Good!,” “Lullaby Of Birdland” and the jam session “Flying Home.” Comes complete with an essay by Will Friedwald.
